North York, Ontario's History

By 1922, North York flourished when it was formed as a township from the northern part of the former township of York. Located in close proximity to Old Toronto and included in Metropolitan Toronto in 1953, this area rapidly developed into one of the most populated areas in the region. North York was declared a borough in 1967 and granted city status in 1979, quickly becoming an attractive destination for high-density residences, rapid transit links, and corporate headquarters at the bustling North York City Centre. In 1998 it was amalgamated into Toronto but continued to be a vital secondary economic hub of the new metropolis beyond Downtown Toronto.
