Before Europeans arrived in the area, what is now known as Vaughan was inhabited by Huron-Wendat people. The ancestral Skandatut village overlooked the east branch of the Humber River and housed an estimated population of 2,000 during the sixteenth century. Not only this but a nearby ossuary - essentially a mass grave – discovered in Kleinburg in 1970 was within proximity to the Seed-Barker Huron site just one kilometer north.
Despite its prior remoteness, Europeans discovered the area's potential as a settling spot in 1792. Étienne Brûlé was the first European to traverse Vaughan, traveling along Humber Trail in 1615. Following this exploration, townships were established and settlers began to populate Vaughan more frequently due to improved roadways that made transport simpler.
In 1850, Vaughan Township was formed and the Vaughan Road was constructed to serve as a link between it and Toronto. This historic road stretched from Eglinton Avenue up until present-day Dufferin Street in Toronto, although all that remains today is its southern portion running through York's eastern half.
In 1971, the York Region's municipal government was formed and assumed responsibility for policing and welfare services. At this same time, Vaughan Township joined forces with Woodbridge Village to become the Town of Vaughan. A decade later in 1991, it officially became a City following its official legal status change.
The present-day Vaughan has since transformed into a bustling cityscape, with its population continuing to increase and settlements sprouting up rapidly. Vaughan City embodies the spirit of progress that typifies modern-day Canada from a small rural village to an urban center of services and entertainment.
